NissanConnect Services Feature Enhancements for Existing Mobile App

NissanConnect Services

NissanConnect Services is Nissan North America remote services mobile app built and managed by SiriusXM's Connected Vehicle Division. The app allows users access to specific features related to their vehicle from their mobile devices, such as Start/Stop the car or Lock/Unlock doors, plus several other features available to users.

I joined the team and tasked with finishing the app, which was already in production but was missing a few key features before being considered complete. 

After a quick inventory of the existing app against the backlog of features needed to get the app finished, I quickly had to ramp up and bring things inline and current for prep for handoff for product development. 

During this, I was the only Lead UX Product and UX designer assign to this OEM, one of the largest encompassing, not just the Nissan App but also the luxury brand Infiniti.  

Getting Started: 

Vehicle Status

Considering the NissanConnect App was an already existing app, one would think User flows or data maps would not be necessary, but that was not the case.  I quickly started working to find where all the holes were and gathering essential assets needed to build a full picture of the app's functionality and what platform limitations existed, so the design of new feature requests was correct to reduce rework. After conducting a full audit of the app, it was time to work on building features. 

Examples of User flow, content mapping, and IA are UX tools necessary to help inform design, a lot which may never be seen.

The Challange

Status View to be named later Vehicle Status was one such project I worked on during this time. The goal was to provide a way for users to easily access status details or alert them to their vehicle issues. 

The new feature must work within the current app framework and stay close to the existing app's look and feel as possible. The feature must be accessible from the home / remote services screen and must be within two taps to access. Quick statuses also must be visible at all times on the remove services screen. These quick updates refreshed for up-to-date information to the user upon accessing the app.

Skeching the Idea

With the existing app's design, this was a challenge due to the limited real estate available.  Additional limitations, such as no scrolling pages or use of card design, had to be considered.

I sketched out ideas and conducted whiteboard sessions with the Product Manager and Tech Lead to get feedback and verify the sketch ideas would not break the app and see if what I was proposing was possible to do within the time allotted.  Vehicle Status must be designed, developed, and tested ready for production within five months. 


Wireframes + Prototyping

After a few iterations, I was able to get a design together that worked within the platform and existing app's limitations and pleasing to the client.   I built out a clickable prototype with Adobe XD for both the NissanConnect App and the Infiniti Connect app to show functionality to the dev and the client.

Summary of Accomplishments

As of December 2019, Vehicle Status officially launched into the app store and is currently available for download to anyone who owns a 2020 Nissan model or newer. 

Nissan is currently working on a brand refresh to include new products and feature releases. I rolled off SXM-CV Nissan as the lead designer in 2019. I continued in my capacity as SME / liaison to the new UX team ramping up for the new app redesign.
